Help revise my writing -Why Chinese Home-made Movies....
Hello, dearest friends. It's my first time coming to this wonderful website. Here is one of my recent writing. Your advice is really appreciated.
Why Chinese Home-made Movies Fail to Attract Audience?
A lot of people like to go to cinema at weekends, especially in China where there are relatively not many entertainment facilities. With the development of human mind, people are becoming more critical on the contents of the movies. Seeing a wonderful movie at the cinema will not only make you feel relaxed, but sometimes also let you understand the meaning of life and other aspects of thinking. Of course, there’re a lot kinds of movies with different purposes. Some many only let you laugh for a while; some may let you think deeply, while a lot of others grasp your heart for both their entertainment and social affection. On the other hand, there is another different point of view towards the category of movie. Some people are likely to divide the whole film production roughly into two parts: one is commercial, the other non-commercial or literary. Many years ago there were only small quantities of movies made in mainland China. People tended to enjoy those non-commercial movies very much. Though we could not deny the fact that it was very young for Chinese film industry, it could still be concluded that at that time, people liked to see home-made movies only because there were no other choices.
Afterwards, along with the China’s opening-up and reforming, great changes have taken place, especially in those cities and town on east coastline. For the first time, we had the chance to touch on the world’s attraction through imported foreign movies. Year by year, a great deal of excellent, hugely-invested foreign-made movies have rushed into China’s market, making it possible for us to choose what is to our liking, which is not imaginable before.
It is an undisputable fact that after about 90-year development, China’s film industry still can hardly be comparable with foreign counterparts, especially with Hollywood in the USA. From time to time, to produce a popular movie, it is not sufficient only to have a good script and a group of so-called best actors. There are a lot of other key elements which can fully decide whether a movie is a big hit or not. One of them is the regulatory system of film industry.
A lot of insiders are always complaining about it when talking about the current situation of China’s film industry. Every movie must be censored by several rigid experts who are using the regulations and standards stipulated many years ago. Every year, many excellent movies are banned and are not allowed to be produced throughout China due to their objectionable aspects, which are decided by this regulatory system. At the same time, foreign-born movies are welcomed by our Chinese audience. Nearly each of them is hugely invested with many commercial advertisements before coming out. According one report, in 2003, among the top-ten movies in mainland China (chosen by its box offices), 7 are foreign movies. One is joint-invested, and only 2 are wholly domestic movies. Does it mean that Chinese people really don’t like home-made movies? No, it doesn’t. We are really eager to anticipate our domestic movies. But the fact is few film directors are willing to direct a movie in that their effortful fruit very often will be completely altered when going through the censoring procedure. In order to seek a more flexible production environment, many of them are now trying to find foreign-based companies to get invested. It has a least two advantages: one is to attract more money, the one to gain more free while making final edition. Usually, foreign products are more favored by Chinese authority than domestic ones. It is true.
Movie-going has become one of the steady kinds of entertainment in China. Everyone knows China has a vast market in every aspect. Many foreign investors have made huge profit by selling their movies to China, and we, on one hand, “enjoy” the imported movies, on the other hand, are worrying to search China’s home-made movies. However, on this is certain: if the regulatory system is not reformed completely, if there still exit so many barriers for distributing movies, China’s film industry will one day collapse. At that time, it is meaningless to discuss why home-made movies fail to attract Chinese audience, because there will be no home-made Chinese movies at all.
