Three particular ways which proves Bartleby to be an existential hero are when his boss isolates him behind a screen wall, as he “prefer not to”, and as he dies with his eyes profoundly open. Although some actions of Bartleby were irrelevant to existentialism, these are the definite reasons why Bartleby is perceived by existentialists to be an existential hero.02br

01span00 00In the story “Bartleby the Scrivener” walls are repeatedly mentioned because they correspond to the feeling of isolation and internment in the depressing, harsh and miserable environment of Wall Street. For example, Bartleby’s boss wanted to keep at range to communicate with him but at the same time he also didn’t want Bartleby to be visually close. Bartleby then was isolated by his boss and stationed behind a screen wall.00 00As Bartleby works and sleeps in a boring, desolate office, he also doesn’t even have a view from his window, just “02span00lofty brick wall, black by age and everlasting shade”01span00. 02span02br

It seems as if Bartleby 01span00wants to lose his consciousness of life; if not, already have. In fact, rather then scorning the gods by giving his life some meaning or rolling his rock back up the mountain, He wants to part away 00 00from his awareness completely and end the absurdity of his existence altogether. 02span02br

00human about him”01span00. 02span00 00It looks as if he’s very self-contained and values passive 02br

00resistance. The “incurably forlorn” nature of Bartleby is not accepted in society because 02br

00he fails to conform to the normal practices, which indeed are necessary roles in society. 02br

00 00It’s difficult for Bartleby’s spirit to 01span00fit into his surroundings.02span00 He fails to have interest for the bleak world that he lives in, which is why he “prefers not to” do anything. Bartleby’s differentiation arises from the fact that Nippers and Turkey will continue working in order to please their boss past the point of insanity, whereas Bartleby, who has no interest in pleasing anyone, would simply answer “I would prefer not to” refusing to fallow orders leaving his boss powerless against Bartleby and gives no justification to be angry with him which then “he turns to them (Nippers & Turkey) for some reinforcement for his own faltering mind.” He would “prefer not to” live in this society so he slowly disengages himself from it, and eventually dies “with his eyes profoundly open”. 02br
