Identity Crisis
A little girl asked her mother, "Mother do you think I am pretty?" and her mother replied "Not really my child, but you will be after a nose job" Cosmetics surgery, as defined by dictionary.com is surgery performed to improve the appearance of a person, rather than for medical reasons. Recently cosmetic surgery has become very acceptable in America and is now even catering to children. I for one opposed cosmetic surgeries because they tend to be very expensive, they may result in complications, and because it is a way of people to mask their real selves.

Beauty once meant been unique, like none other, one of a kind but now beauty is surgically improving our selves to look like a celebrity, according to Dr. Nancy Etcoff, ''We are in danger of doing something unthinkable, which is making beauty boring, When it is all so overtly about appearance, personal identity becomes almost trivial. It's as if people would rather choose a mask, than look like themselves, or their mother, or daughter.'' Plastic surgery shields who we really are and creates an illusion, then casts it unto people hoping they believe that is what we actually look like. It hides our true identity, hides us from who we really are just because we want to fit in.
Now people would rather surgically enhance them selves to look like a famous celebrity or a blow up doll than look like their mothers, grandmothers, fathers, or children, Now people rather hide their genetic beauty, the one thing that sent them aside from every one and give that up to look like someone else. According to Alex Kuczynski "a lovelier you" Americans underwent 8.3 million procedures last year and even children are now enhancing them selves, due to the image, the idea of beauty portrayed to us by the media.
In the article "Putting your best Face Forward ", the author writes that" Now cosmetic surgery that was once seen as a shameful act is now performed at elite hospitals such as the Mayo Clinic and John Hopkins University, People try to find validations constantly, it human nature to want to be praised and complimented based on your looks, how you dress or what you can do . Carl Elliott wrote that "Many Americans have given up on changing the world and have decided to change themselves instead" people have now given up on waiting to be recognized by society so the go make them selves look like some one who is already recognized. Televisions Programming companies, seek out people who are emotional vulnerable and sell them the idea of surgical beauty. These people been in a state of wanting to fit in accepts to be humiliated on national television in order to achieve beauty, shows like bridalplasty that takes about 12 brides to be and put them in a house, then make them compete every weeks to win cosmetic surgery. With the media constantly telling us what is beauty and putting programs of "ugly" people getting plastic surgeries and then become socially accepted, no wonder more and more people want to give in to surgical enhancements, in order to be socially accepted.
We own our bodies, and we can do with them as we please, we have the right to alter our selves and create illusions, to get a fake nose or a breast augmentation, but where do we draw the line, people alter themselves because they want to fit in, because they want to be socially accepted and not be labeled as "the guy with the Jewish nose or the girl with the Asian eyes. "The new nose may resolve those fantasies or may lead us to demand even more proof of our control over our bodies" and in order to get more proof of our control over our body, we might go on to alter just about everything that makes us unique like the little bump on our nose or the scare we got when we were five. We own our bodies but it does not follow that we should alter our bodies till they become unrecognizable.
In conclusion, why do we humans try to cheat nature? We might be able to pull the wool over the eyes of a fellow human and hide who we really are but we can't fool nature, years ago, naturally aging was a thing of beauty but now in this overly commercialized time, cosmetic surgery is seen as the only was to fit in. This just creates an identity crisis
