Help Please!! unpaid personal leave of abosence letter

Hello Everyone,

I'm so excited that there exists such a forum where we can help each other improve our English. Althought I've been in this country for a number of years, I'm far far away from acquiring the ease with writing English as that of a native speaker. So I hope any native speakers out there can be brutally honest with your thoughts on my writing. Don't worry, I don't know where you live Emotion: smile

Long story short, I'm trying to write to my employer to apply for a leave of absense. Any of your contructive input is much appreicated! Specifically, I'm wondering what you think of the tone, message, and any usage issues that's natural to spot for a native speaker reading my letter.

Thank you in advance!

Terri

Dear ___,

I hope you are doing well. In the 8 months that I have been on board with [company name], I have had the pleasure to work with a dedicated team of colleagues and managers. My contributions to the team has included supporting proposal efforts, internal marketing decks, and provide deliverables to the client’s satisfaction. Unfortunately, my current circumstances require that I take some time off so I can continue perform in ways that meet the team's expectations. Here are the circumstances surrounding the applicaiton for unpaid leave of absence:

  • I am in poor health condition and I haven’t been feeling well for the past 2 months. On a recent visit to the doctor, he advised me that my health condition needs immediate attention. The doctor advised that I take time off for treatment and rest. I am currently working with the doctor to go through treatment and am under close observation and evaluation.

  • A major cause for my current state of health is due to family the fact that my family is undergoing relationship hardship. It has become necessary for its members to step back and work out some deep rooted issues in order to keep it together. The process has been emotional and physically draining for all involved. I feel that it is in the best interest of me and [company name] for me to take some time off enough so that I can be a productive employee upon my return.

Thank you for your consideration. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Regards,

Terri A.

As a general principle, when writing this kind of letter go as quickly as possible to the main point. I would not go into great detail about the reasons for ill health and I would ask to discuss the matter. Ask your doctor for a letter setting out the proposed treatment.

Thanks you, Feebs 11 for your hepful response. You made a good point to discuss the matter personally with the employer. I didn't mention last, but this letter is actually partly of the application for personal leave where the reasons for the leave has to be stated on paper. I'm weighing between giving just enough detail to be convincing and protecting my privacy, if you know what mean. Given th

Hi -

Here's the guideline from the FMLA site: The employer is allowed to ask the employee to obtain a certification from a medical provider testifying to the need for the employee to take the leave for themselves

Your problem arises in that the Family/Medical Leave Act only requires them to grant you unpaid leave with a guarantee of a position when you return if you've been ther
