The speaker was Ms. Mary Ellen McClanahan, Director of the Governor’s Entrepreneur & Small Business Office.00 00She presented the GA Entrepreneur-Friendly (EF) Community Initiative Program and how to become EF Community. 02br 02br 00 02br 02br 00EF Community Program is designed to assist community to recruit and retain businesses. Ms. McClanahan highlighted some of the key steps to become a Georgia’s Entrepreneur- Friendly Community and services provided by the State. Networking, surveying the local entrepreneurs, and increasing community awareness about the benefits of local business development are the key methods for building a local entrepreneurs environment. She noted that every community should take advantage of the State of Georgia Expansion and Retention Assistance. 02br 02br 00 02br 02br 00Ms. McClanahan also presented the 2005 Business-Friendly Legislation, which includes Small Business Tax Relief, Extra $500 job tax credit, OneGeorgia ESB Loan Guarantee, and OneGeorgia Strategic Industries Loan Fund. The Trade Mission Connections Program was also discussed. She indicated that this program was created to market GA’s local communities. Annually, Governor Perdue makes several trips to different countries to discuss with businesses why GA is a destination for their investment. After returning from his trade mission, many international companies have called and requested information from the office about local community.02br 02br 00 02br 02br 00Near the end of the presentation, Ms. McClanahan shared some of the EF communities’ success stories. Several EF Communities acquired ideas and suggestions from the citizens through programs such as Youth, Resource Center, Retail & Growth Responsiveness, Business Plan Competition, etc.00 00If a community is proactive, Ms. McClanahan suggested we should call them and ask how these programs work. She also introduced some of the regional representatives and noted that all communities should give them a call for assistance.00 02br 02br 00 02br 02br 00The audience raised some questions and comments. They believe the State should have an EF logo and local community should also receive EF newsletter from the office. Ms. McClanahan responded that she currently provides e-letters and will discuss with her team about EF logo.00 00There was also a discussion about how do communities go further after becoming an Entrepreneur-Friendly Community.
