Help! Paragraph list..?

Below is my paragraph for an essay I am writing and I am not sure of how to punctuate it. It seems like a list, but if I start with the colon and use semi-colons afterwards for each "item" in the list Microsoft Word says it is a run-on sentence...

My questions are: should write it like it is here or use semi-colons?

If I use only periods; do I need to remove the colon at the beginning of the paragraph?

"Idealism should be prudent: It is what the ordinary person discerns is proper, regardless of all the influences telling him that it is naïve, old-fashioned or is not convenient. It suggests protecting Civil Rights laws that regard the family as the central element of society. It would pass laws that are always moral and facilitate principles. It means the extensive distribution of property and resources, to give superior justice and liberty to family units; not corporations and special interest groups."

Thank you very much Clive.

I would like to add that I wanted to join the group, but the "Join" registration seems to be broken.
