Help on sentence skill question please?

Stamp collecting being a hobby that is sometimes used in the schools to teach economics and social studies.
A. being a hobby that is
B. is a hobby because it is
C. which is a hobby
D. is a hobby

I thought the correct answer is "A", but it says "D".
Could anyone explane why?

"A" doesn't make a complete sentence. You could say:

"Stamp collecting, being a hobby that is sometimes used in schools to teach economics and social studies, is becoming more popular with children."

The main verb of the sentence is the last "is", and the core sentence is "Stamp collecting is becoming more popular with children". The part "being a hobby..." gives e
