Help on

Page nineteen says

-She had treated herself deliberately to an interesting holiday abroad in order to help on forgetfulness before she went back to start working in earnest.

What does HELP ON mean? In dictionaries we have 'help out', not 'help on'.

OttoJ in order to help on forgetfulness This is pretty much inexplicable. Was it written by an English speaker? I suppose the idea is that the holiday would either help prevent her from forgetting so much or would help her to forget something unpleasant, but it is very unclear as written.
