Help- Media is killing my English!!!

Once upon a time(in a time so long ago that I don't even know if it is a figment of my imagination or such a time did, in reality, exist), I used to have a good hold on English...then came globalization and excessive exposure to Media ....now daily I am bombarded with so many types of English, that it is becoming difficult to figure what is wrong and what is right...
Even without my knowledge, poor grammar is making its way into the sentences I form. I have lost all ability to filter the good English from the bad and what is permissible and casual from what is outright murder of the language...
I do not want to sound all "prim" in my English but I do not want to sink to the levels of "gutter talk". I come from a non-English speaking country and have to discover second-hand what is trendy from what is just poor English....a task that's not very easy
Can anybody help me??(of course, that would mean that first you have to understand all the gibberish I have written)

Thanks.

First, let me say that I applaud your desire to keep up your standards of English in spite of the onslaught of bad English! And, to reassure you, let me say that the English in your post is excellent -- mostly correct and natural-sounding. So it seems that your instincts are good and your natural filtering process is working well so far.

  • I would suggest that when you have questions about the level of English in something you read or hear, you post it here (with some context) and we will be happy to tell you how it sounds.
  • In general, I would say consider the source -- what you read in the New York Times is probably well-written.

Thanks a lot khoff. Yes, I think considering the source will help a lot.
khoff(It's a pleasure to help someone who is still willing to capitalize "I" and spell out "you.")
Yes, people who do that are fast becoming an endangered species
