The Chart shows the information on migration to and from the UK during the period from 1999 to 2008.

It is evident that both immigration and emigration saw considerable rises in rates, but the figure for immigration to the UK were totally higher. Net migration reached a peak in 2004 and 2007.

In 1999, the number of people who came to live in UK was about 450000, while under 300000 people emigrated. The figure for net migration was a oscillation around 160000 and it stood at an approximate level until 2003.

From 2004 to 2008, the net migration fluctuated at somewhere between 160000 and 250000. In 2004, the immigration rate steeply increased nearly 600000 people and there was a much lower rise in emigration, so net migration peaked at 250000 people. After 2004, the rate of immigration remained the same high; otherwise the emigration’s number was a fluctuation. It dropped sharply in 2007, by topping at almost 420000 people in 2008.
