Help me with words please

Hi,
do the underlined words fit in each sentence, please? If not, could you suggest a better one, please?

1) A building which is many levels high is called a skyscraper.

2) The soil beneath New York is rock.

3) He found himself out of work.

4) There was a commerce for a board game based on words.

Okay. Or: "stories."

I would say "ground" (soil is loose, rock is solid).
