Help me with this question, please

The characterization of historical analysis as a form of fiction is not likely to be received______ by either historians or literary critics, who agree that history and fiction deal with _________ orders of experience.
A. quietly . . significant
B. passively . . unusual
C. sympathetically . . distinct
D. contentiously . . realistic

From the words “… is not likely to be received”, I can tell “D. distinct” would be the right answer. But what does the author mean by saying “is not likely to received sympathetically by either historian or literary critics”? Where does the "sympathy" from?
