Help me with these sentences please. I am so confused about tenses.

" My company held a company trip every year. I also attended the trip last year. All of the employees were divided into many groups....."

I am writing an essay about my former company trip last year and I am so confused about tenses. Right now I am a student and I am no longer employee of my former company anymore. Regarding the first sentence of my essay, do I have to use present simple tense? It is a fact because the trip happens annually. Or I can use past simple tense for the first sentence because I do not work for the company anymore and all of this thing happened last year. However, from my view as non-native speaker, "My company held a company trip every year. " sounds odd to me.

Please help me.

Thank you.

If you are no longer working for that company, then use past tense if you also use ' my company'. If You change the text to read ' ABC Compan y', then you can use present tense.
