With the rise of e-books comes the decline in paper books. Some people see this as a good step forward while others do not. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?
It is observed that e-books, which are now widely read by many people in the world, may one day prevail over paper books and result in their eventual disappearance. While digital books are easily available and relatively cheap, there will also be some drawbacks to having this kind of publication.
One evident benefit of e-books is that they can be accessed almost anywhere, which would facilitate learning. In other words, even if it is in the USA or Timbuktu, as long as there is an internet connection available, they could be downloaded and read which would promote learning, the flow of information and ideas. Another reason that e-books would be advantageous is that they are usually inexpensive. According to Reader’s Digest Magazine, the average price of an e-book is around half of the price of its physical counterpart, resulting in further in its further popularity.
On the other hand, there are obvious disadvantages to having e-books over paper books. Firstly, it would mean that traditional method of reading would eventually disappear and, along with it, the experience of holding an actual book in one’s hand. In my opinion, physically flipping pages of a novel is one of the joys this world has to offer. Such an experience would all be gone if e-books were the only form available. Secondly, it would result in the collapse of publication houses. A lot of them would shut down because there would be no reason for people to buy their products if all books are published digitally. This would devastate many people financialy who rely on them as a source of income.
In conclusion, while there are plus points to having e-books over paper books, too much would be lost as a result. Paper books should be maintained to ensure their availability for future generations.
