Help me with my Ielts essay task 2 - No5

Some people think government should spend money on measure to save languages with few speaker from dying out completely. Others think this is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

It is true that more than half of languages in the world are in danger of extinction and are likely to disappear. Although it can be argued that spending money on protecting endangered languages is a waste, I believe preserving these languages should receive financial assistance from the state.

On the one hand, I can understand the arguments against governments funding for saving minority languages. The main reason for this view is that governments have more important concerns rather than protecting a language spoken by a few people. For example, schools and hospitals in rural areas need state support for improving their facilities and upgrading with contemporary equipment, which enables the inhabitants to improve their living conditions. Another reason for this opinion is that a language’s extinction is just a form of linguistics natural selection due to the spread of globalization, and English is considered the sole language that every global citizen should know to communicate in a multicultural society. Obviously, living in a monolingual society could shorten the distance between people.

On the other hand, I believe that some languages definitely require national budget to maintain. In several minority communities, local people may be not fully aware of the seriousness of cultural lost when a language disappears. This means that there will be no record of accumulated history and knowledge of a culture, and young generations is likely not to have any chance to know more about their root and grandfather generation. As a result, cultural diversity around the world will be soon degraded. Therefore, more financial support from governments significantly contributes to preserving tradition, customs and behaviors that are part of a country’s history.

In conclusion, I believe endangered languages should be received support from states asd well as the public because minority languages’ extinction have a detrimental impact on our cultural heritage.
