Today the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold.

Goods consumption is a debatable issue concerned by many people. More popular consumer goods are expended than before. Some hold the belief its cause is not to fulfill the social demand, but the influence of advertising. I would say I agree with this opinion in some extent because although advertisement plays a vital role in marketing, I think the main reason of this increasing of sales is people's needs.

On the one hand, it can be ignored that advertising has great effect on the sales of goods. Nowadays, manufacturers apply a variety of methods to market their products to consumers. It is not difficult to see advertisements on streets, on big buildings or on many kinds of media like TV, radio. It is true that producers are willing to pay a huge amount of money to utilize celebrities to recommend their goods. These ways of advertising help people to choose their products easier. However, due to money spent on advertising, these goods are usually more expensive than the counterparts without advertising. Thus, advertisments are successful in some cases, especially for rich people who want to be in fashion and are able to afford costly products. The power of advertising is limited.

On the other hand, the growth of sales of popular consumer goods arises due to the rise of people's demand. The original purpose of the trade is to respond the social needs and despite being affected by advertising, it still remains stable. For instance, people without high come actually do not care much about advertisements, however, they do focus on how useful the goods are and whether these goods are suitable for them or not. Therefore, they are fluctuated slightly by advertisements.

In conclusion, I would agree that in spite of the fact that the power of advertising has an impact on the high sales of popular goods, the main cause of this raise is the real demand of society.
