Nowadays, there are more teenagers participating in volunteer work than before. Some hold the belief that unpaid community service, like working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children, should be a compulsory part of high school programmes. I would say that I am of this opinion due to some reasons to be discussed below.
High schools should include volunteer work compulsorily as a part of programmes for several reasons. Firstly, community service can develop teenagers' social skills. It provides them with skills to socialize and interact with people, especially team-work skill. These skills will be useful for their future, their further education or their work, so they will be benefited by learning how to communicate with people and respect others' opinions. Admittedly, it is more valuable to do volunteer work than to stay at home, using electric devices or spending hours on the Internet. Moreover, community service gives people opportunities to meet new friends and strongthen their friendship.
Secondly, working for the community service, people can improve their personality and gain virtues, like patience. For instance, when teenagers teach younger children, they are actually learning the value of endurance which can not be learnt from the textbooks. The virtues can only be acquired through practice. The good quality will be essential for them to deal with troubles. In addition, volunteer work can mitigate their strain. It is true that nowadays, students are more stressed than before. Unpaid social work can keep their mind off from their studies. Therefore, community service brings people many advantages.
In conclusion, because of these benefits, considering unpaid social work as a compulsory part of high school programmes should be fulfilled.
