Help me understand two sentences

Hello, everyone

I've been translating an article recently, when i do the translation, two sentences really puzzle me .

They come from an article written by Aung Sang Suu Kyi:

1.The effort necessary to remain uncorrupted in an environment where fear is an integral part of everyday existence is not immdiately apparent to those fortunate enough to live in states governed by the rule of law.

2.The quintessential revolution is that of the spirit, born of an intellectual conviction of the need for change in those mental attitudes and values which shape the course of a nation's development.

I wish somebody could help me, that would be very thankful and grateful.
