Help me understand this

There was a task given to us. The person said and I quote "each day you all have to change the first letter of your name to the same thing, but it has to be different each day".
My take of this task was I can change the first letter to anything that it can be a word, Symbol anything. But others think this sentence states that it should be changed to one letter only.
Help me understand where I did I go wrong. As it says change it to same"thing".
