Help me to understand

I have two sentences below with underlined parts. When I see those kinds of sentences, I have this strong inclination to put the definite article "the" in front of them to limit or specify those general terms. I am sure those temptations are wrong to befallen to. Help me to curve this inclination with your enlightening explanation. Sorry if I am not being clear.

We dealt with threats.

Jesus walked to His disciples who were beset by fierce waves.
