The London’s underground is the oldest system, opened in 1863. It is also the largest system, with 394 kilometres of route and 775 millions passengers were served annually. The second largest system is in Paris, with 199 kilometres of route. However, it serves 1191 passengers a year, more significant than the figure for London’s underground above. Tokyo under ground railway network is just only third in term of size, but it is the most used, with 1927 millions passengers per year.
Of the three newer networks, the Washington DC underground is opened earliest, in 1976 and has 126 kilometres of route, compared to only 11 kilometres and 28 kilometres for the Tokyo and Los Angeles systems. While the Los Angeles network is the newest, opened in 2001, the Tokyo network is the smallest and serves only 45 million passengers a year.
