I would choose "force". I think it is much better for something physical like our example. Of course, in the appropriate physical situation "pressure" can be correct. But here I definitely would not choose "pressure"; I think its too wimpy.

Possibly, "the force of the crowd" is something applied at one one particular point - where a gate gives way, for example

And, on the other hand, "the pressure of the crowd" is something felt throughout the crowd - each person pressing in on each other

I'd accept that, although it seems a rather fine distinction

It's not that I have no appreciation at all for what you are saying, but I don't think I will waver from supporting the official answer as the best one.
