Help me solve this problem

Q: Choose the word that is opposite in meaning to the underlined part Sentence: that afternoon at the railway station I was surprised and made happy by the unexpected arrival of Miss Margaret

I think A and D are possible, but D is somewhat strange. So I choose A, but the correction is D. Please explain it to me.Thanks
