Help me solve this problem

I can't understand what meaning of the phrase remains one. I used dictionary but I don't find the appropriate meaning for remain in this situation:
Cook was fascinated by sailing, astronomy and the production of maps, and quickly became an expert in these subjects. It was during his voyage to the Pacific Ocean that Cook made his historic landing in Australia and the major discovery that New Zealand was two separate islands. He became a national hero and still remains one today.
