Help me prevaricate around the bush

I'm at a stage where mild interest is being expressed in a tale about four kids that get dragged into a small-time version of the mob.

Except the interest is coming from an actor that is 35+. So all the cute and touching contrast between the two worlds largely dissolves, as the buddies are now older and already involved in petty crime.

So I need to re-jig the head a little to change direction.

So I'm looking for suggestions of movies of small-time crooks that move up the ladder. Or tales of buddies that start to disapprove of each other. Anything to exorcise the kids in my head and keep me away from the writing, I suppose!
All thoughts welcomed.

[/nq] Hello, Condi!! My first thought is: have your 35-y-o actor be a Fagin type who draws the boys into the gang. The kids think it's all a lark, until Actor Man kills someone - maybe a fellow gang member - in a dispute, and things turn ugly, the kids turn on each other, etc.

That was largely the original story, with the Fagin figure being one

Sorry, I almost missed the reference! But no, it's sillier than that. You get karma, but not for this one!

I feel like I've had the reference on the tip of my thalamus all day, but I'm stuck on Wizard of Oz, and I know that's not right. I don't care about karma, I'm coming over there to choke it out of you...

Though AT CLOSE RANGE is mostly the story of Sean Penn and his brother Chris Penn trying to earn the love of their dad, Christopher Walken, who is a small time crook - so much of the film takes us on the road with Walken's small town gang of theives that it might help.

Also, totally different - there's a movie wth Bill Paxton about Irish gypsies who con people out of money and do some sma

Ta! Another good excuse to fill two shocking gaps in my viewing: "Lock, Stock" and "******". That'll keep me busy prevaricating for a while (more research).
