Help me plz..

could you please tell me which one of the two sentences is correct.

1) I grow up with the guy who is the head in the advertising industry.
2) I grew up with the guy who is the head in the advertising industry.

I think 2nd one is correct because we are talking about the past events. But I heard the first one somewhere. so please help me with the correct sentence.

Maybe you misheard it? "the head" doesn't make sense to me. I'd have written/said: I grew up with a guy who is a leader in the advertising business.
