Help me please with this sentence

But then it struck Mr Dursley that this was probably some silly stunt-these people were obviously collecting for something .... yes, that would be it.

The previous sentence is in previous post.

I dont understand what did the writer mean by "silly stunt" and what is the point of saying "that they are collecting for something...?"

I just don't understnad it. Please, I'd be really glad if somebody could explain it to me. Thanks

As I said, you need to read the quote in context. When you do you will see that the strangely dressed people are wizards.
