Help me please

I have been searching for the usage of 'What for?' and 'For what?' and I have found out that people have different opinions about it. And I know 'What for?' means 'Why?' and I also think 'For what?' itself can mean the same with'What for?' and 'Why?'. Don't you think so? I really would like to hear from more teachers about it. I would appreciate it if you could help me out of this confusion. Thank you.

'What for?' seems to me to be the standard form, with 'For what?' an emphatic version, not used in all Englishes.
