I found the best teacher was practice. Would you agree?

Read, read and read. and a good dictionary is a must!

Grammar is the mother of all languages. (sounds strange, doesn't it? but I like it)

agree Maj, I also think that grammar is extremely important if you want to master a language.

I would partially agree with Maj. Practice is great if you are training right--correct grammar, sentence structure, punctuations,etc.--because if you get used to doing things incorrectly, then you'll present yourself in your writing incorrectly too.

As for Orpheus, reading is good, but one must also need to learn how to read effectively.

Somehow I disagree to place too much emphasis on grammar to improve English. It can serve as an obstacle for those who are too self-conscious about making mistakes. So thinking too much about the correctness in grammar before making a speech would hinder one's progress.

In my opinion, copy good sentences and practice through a drill to get used to it. It comes as automatic reflexes once

I agree most with whl626. Some students (or learners) are so worried about making mistakes that they "clam up".
I believe immersion is best. Listen, read, write, immitate, study and speak.
Remember that as a non-native speaker you are blessed with a license to make mistakes, but try not to become a serial offender.
