Help me improve this sentence.

Our client denies performing any defamatory actions as he was just expressing his opinion based on his previous experience with your company.

Is "was just (only?) expressing" a proper phrase about a situation which took place a few days AGO? Maybe the Past Simple tense is more suitable here?
