Dear all, I am fresh and am applying PhD.This is my fist time to write a motivation letter. I ask for help if anyone can review it.The deadlien of th eapplicaiton is this week. I really need Help
Respected Sir, I am currently studying the Master’s Program Infrastructure Planning in the University of Stuttgart, Germany. I am doing the master thesis now. I would like to apply for the PhD of International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modeling. In 2007, I received my Bachelor of engineering degree in environmental engineering at the place of top decile of my class. During the bachelor study, I have mastered the main physical principles of geosystem. By conducting laboratory activities, I acquired advanced experimental skills, especially related to treating polluted water. Faced with the unexpecting failure of the experiments, I became more patient. After finishing the bachelor, I came to Germany to peruse high learning. The Master’s program is very interdisciplinary. During the courses, I have learnt that the integration is becoming more and more important. It is required not only in the coordination of different institutes but also in the different disciplines and temporal as well as spatial scales. I have learnt some basic integrated approaches to deal with issues of urban planning and infrastructure planning. I did also a large case study and gain practical knowledge to apply these approaches. My master study really helps me gain a wider perspective of these subjects. My master thesis’ topic is to assess the habitat suitability of the sturgeon spawning sites before and after the Three Gorges Dam. It integrates the ecological issue and the infrastructure planning. What I am interested is to try new assessment approaches and then compare them. At the beginning, I was worried and hesitated because I doubted if the new methods would works. But I adjusted myself and courage myself to meet the challenges. I learnt on my own about fuzzy-rule method, generalized addictive model and spatial interpolation by reading books and consulting others and finally apply them in my research. The results are not always satifified, but I realize that, if we don’t explore, we will not find new mainland. Through using numerical methods, it sharpened my critical thinking and analysis. I also took this chance to learn R and practice my skills of GIS as well. By doing the master, I have read 2 important books:“The Foundation Series “and “The Age of Big Data”. They make me more interested in system modeling and mathematics. The physical mechanism is to know how and why the world function in this way, however data help us to find out if there is a relationship between various elements and what is the relationship. The geosystem is a complex world. At the larger scale, data is more essential to find out the rules. Keeping this in mind, I have involved myself to learn geostatistics and stochastic modeling. I am always curious about how things work and my friends give me a nickname: Hundred Thousand Whys. With eager to know the society, I organized a team with 10 persons to investigate two villages with a big development gap. There, we surveyed and compared the land use and topography, economical status and social problems of the two villages. Apart from keen on academic research, I often participate in volunteering activites. In bachelor, I took my part time to do supporting education for a primary school in suburban of Beijing. From these experience, I am getting well-rounded. I have learnt a lot from various disciplines, though it will never be enough. Now, I want to focus on the interaction of land and atmosphere. I wish doing PhD in IMPRS-ESM not only as I like Hamburg most. Furthermore, the institute is doing the interdisciplinary research on the geosystem. The topics ignite my curiosity the most. I believe it will provide me a good academic environment and I can take the advantages of my educational backgrounds there. Thank you for reviewing my application, and I am looking forward to your acceptance. Sincerely Yingjie
