Help me find an example...

I'm looking for something (perhaps an animal) that is defensive at first in a new environment but later accepts or even embraces the conditions.

What about something else beside man?

Most if not all animals evince defensive attitudes in new environments, Anon, and then settle down once they have explored the space– just catch a spider, for instance, and put her in a jar, and you will see this. If it is empty, the spider will eventually accept the space and settle quietly; if she is sharing it with a juicy fly, she will embrace the place (and the fly).

A dog on a lead, a bird in a cage.
