The economy of Hong Kong can’t rely on traditional industries forever. The region has to be a centre of high technology to maintain its status. The software industry is one area with enormous potential for expansion. However, the economic losses due to piracy are enormous. People mistakenly think that songwriters, singers and writers are the only ones who suffer and that this does not matter, as they are rich anyway. However, this is completely untrue. Take music privacy for an example. All sectors, the local music industry, from factory workers to owners of music shops, feel the impact. People are less likely buy an original CD in music shops, causing the economic losses.

2. unemployment

Unemployment rate increases due to infringement activities. Music industry is an example. A recent estimate is that music downloading alone could put the jobs of 600,000 people worldwide at risk. This is because the demand of genuine products decrease. The producers are less likely hire factory workers. Lessen music shops is also lead to job vacancies decrease. Unemployed population would therefore increase.
