The first chart compares a figure of marriages and divorces happening in the USA from 1970 to 2000. The second chart illustrates the marital status of adults in America.
It is clear from the charts, the number of marriages always significantly higher than divorces in each year. Additionally, the figure of the marriages gradually went down in during the research period.
In 1970, there was a 2.5 million of weddings happening, getting about 70% of total married American adults, while, the number of divorces was 1 million, getting roughly 2% of divorced adults in this year. Additionally, the percentage of never married and widowed adults got approximately 15% and 8%, respectively. In 1980, the amount of weddings remained stable, at 2.5 million, but the figure of divorces slightly increases to nearly 1.5 million. In 1990, both the marriages and divorces all insignificantly fell to about 2.3 and 1.1 million, respectively.
In 2000, the figure of weddings slightly went down, at 2 million, and proportion of married adults stood at nearly 60%. Meanwhile, there were about 1 million of divorces, and the rate of divorced adults rose up to nearly 10%, compared to 2% in 1970. Additionally, while the percentage of never married adults slightly went up to 20%, the widowed adult’s figure insignificantly decreases to 5% roughly of the total American population.
