The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries
The chart illustrates the percentage of the citizenry aged 65 and over in 100 years of 3 countries: Japan, Sweden and USA.
It can be seen from the graph, proportion of elderly people in 3 countries increase between 1940 and 2040. Especially, the number of gray-haired in Japan went up sharply from 1940 to 2040.
In 1940, USA has 9% of the aged 65 and over, approximately twice as high as Japanese people while Swedish accounted for 7% of people. The proportions of elderly people in USA and Sweden rose slightly over the next 50 years, about under 15% in 1990. According to the graph, the percentage remained steady under 5% until 2000.
Looking into the future, the proportion of population aged 65 and over of Japan are predicted climb over 15% from 2020 to 2040. Percentage of Japanese people over 65 reach at 27%, while the figures for Sweden and USA will be gradually lower at about 25% and 23% respectively.
