Seeing my sentence a question has arisen in me: opposition can be regarded a singular and a plural noun --is it correct if I shift in the same sentence?
(opposition is .... their)

If this is what you mean:
"the opposition are getting"
it isn't correct in my view

Take a collective noun, let us say 'family'.
Can I say the following, my family is going to their neighbour?
Is - their.
How is it?

I think the pronoun has to agree with the verb: The family are going to their neighbor.

The opposition is getting the upper hand over their opponents.

I know what you mean now. I think you can switch from singular to plural here, but perhaps it's not the most consistent thing to do.
