Many people believe materialism is the key to happiness only to find out that material possessions do not bring them true happiness. According to the “Modern Society And The Quest For Happiness” by Dalai Lama, those living in the materially developed countries, for all their industry, are in some ways less satisfied, are less happy, and suffer more than those living in the least developed countries. Wealth may contribute to our happiness, but it’s not the most important factor; by itself wealth fails to bring us deep inner satisfaction. In my opinion money is not everything and it is sad that many people never come to that realization. Many people believe materialism is the key to happiness only to find out that material possessions do not bring them true happiness.
Those living in the materially developed countries are in some ways less satisfied, are less happy, and suffer more than those living in the least developed countries. Many of these people, who are living in countries like Korea, Bangladesh, Sudan and Ethiopia are far more appreciative of what they have and need for basic survival than people in countries like Germany, Sweden and USA. The individuals who are living in materially developed countries are constantly stressing over item that are not needed for basic survival. According to the quote, ” They are so caught up with the idea of acquiring still more that they make no room for anything else in their lives” by Dalai Lama, he believes wealthy individuals are always stressing over purchasing a new car, new clothes, new technologies that they are constantly forgetting the beautiful thing in life.
The most important fact wealthy individuals tend forget is “family”. For example, through family we find ourselves as give and receive support. Family brings out the best and the worst in each of us. As we open ourselves up to and serve others we learn to love them and ourselves in the process. I personally think that we are true to ourselves and follow our feelings and share openly and honestly with our loved ones we remember why family is important. Unwhealthy people in under developed countries know what the feeling is and will give anything to keep. They seek love from their family over from seeking love from money. This simple family bond makes people living undeveloped countries live their life happier that people living in developed countries.
Wealth blinds us without us even knowing. As a matter of fact, the term of happiness is generally misused. Many people fail to tell the difference between pleasure and happiness. Pleasure is short lived, while happiness is lasting and long lived. Pleasure is divided through a satisfaction of our desires , while happiness lives within us. One other reasons money can’t buy happiness is love. Love is an emotion that a person feels inside his/her heart. I truly think play a important role in our happiness, love provides a man or a woman with everything he or she could ever ask for from pleasure, to security and this feeling is simply indescribable.
In conclusion, money will provide financial security to an individual, but it comes with a cost. The long hours in the office will provide you with a great apartment, a new cell phone, new clothes, but you will miss the feeling of family, love and true permanent happiness. As my father used to say, “true happiness comes from within you and not from your wallet.” Happiness can not be bought, it has to be achieved with action not from our wallets.
