HELP! Italicizing/capitalizaing the names of software?

I am crossing my fingers and hoping someone an help out. I am a beginning writer, writing an article for a magazine, and am unsure about italicizing software brands and types. I rarely write about technology.

For instance, "Open Source software has become..."

Do I capitalize "Open Source"? Do I italicize "Open Source"?

When speaking about Microsoft, Microsoft Word, Free Mind and such, do I italicize AND capitalize?

Very confused, would be eternally grateful for some assistance!

Top answer

Do not capitalize or italicize 'open source' Capitalize brand names, at least. Sometimes I see them italicized as well, but it is unnecessary.
