Help is appreciated

I am reading a British report on consumer concern about genetically modified food. There are a few initials for social groups: AB, C1C2, DE. I don't know what they refer to. Could you help me? The website is http://www.food.gov.uk/multimedia/pdfs/gm_rep.pdf . Thanks.

My guess is that A and B are the two highest social groups (high in terms of income or status), C1 and C2 are probably middle class, and D and E would be the two lowest social groups.

It seems to me that these designations were probably created by the people who did the study. I doubt that these are commonly used or "standard" designations for various social groups i

Thanks, Nona! Are those designations generally well known in the UK?
