help + infinitive


A). I helped him (to) mend his bicycle.


B). I helped her to mount her bicycle.

The infinitive marker is optional in A, but it is obligatory in B.

The sign of the infinitive (to) can be omitted after the verbs 'see', hear', 'let', 'feel', 'help', 'make' and 'watch'.

I have learned "to" in "help someone (to) do" is optional.
My E-J dictionary, however, says that "help a person do (without 'to')" is commoner when the "help" means "physical help".
(EX) He helped me climb (rather than 'to climb') the stairs by popping up me on his shoulders undress.
