Help! I can't understand this paragraph from NYTimes.

I was reading an article in NYTimes and among other difficult lines, this one holds me like an hour.

I just don't get it, so could anybody please transform this paragraph easier so I can understand what the writer tries to say?

Thank you so much!

Hi Anon

Just a brief footnote to Mr M

The life and death of Hypatia has been dramatised more than once in recent times. I guess your quote is from a review of such a drama

So "performance" may mean literally, a dramatic performance, rather than just the manner of her death. Historically, the manner of her death was horrific, but it may have been acted exquisitely
