TRS 105 Portfolio Prospectus—Fall 2011
The purpose of this prospectus is to help you organize your thoughts, make plans for revisions, write your reflective letter, and put together the best portfolio possible. Bring this prospectus and all your essays and portfolio materials to every class. Your portfolio is worth half your grade, so start early and spend time.

Showcase Essay #1—the final draft of your best work to document your mastery of the skills necessary for college-level writing. 500+ words. (25 points)

Which essay did you choose? Why? What are its strengths?

Reread the comments your classmates and instructor provided about that essay and make a plan for revising. What are three or more specific things you will do to make it stronger?

After you make those revisions and edit, proofread, and polish the essay, seek out additional peer feedback. Revise, edit, and repeat as necessary until this essay is strong and error-free.

Showcase Essay #2—the revised, final draft of your second best essay with all work attached. (25 points)

Answer the questions and follow the procedure outlined above: Why did you choose this essay? What are you planning to change?

Look over all the work (prewriting, drafts, peer review sheets, etc.) that went into creating the final, revised, error-free, perfectly formatted essay. What insights does this collection of materials offer into your writing process? Your progress? Do you find one stage more helpful? Why?

Note: you must integrate and cite a quote from a reliable source in one essay (5 points). Which essay did you choose to include the quote? Why?

Reflective letter—an essay of 500 or more words. It’s very, very important that this reflective letter be as specific and concrete as you can make it by providing examples and evidence for every point you make. Give this essay as much attention as your other entries. (15 points)

Will your letter introduce or conclude the portfolio? Who will be the audience (your classmates, your instructor, future students, the president)?

Use the questions in #1 and #2 to help you include an explanation of why you chose those essays to showcase and the changes they went through during the writing process.

Evaluate your growth as a writer this semester. As you review essays 1-5 as well as your responses on their cover sheets, what do you notice?

Discuss your writing strengths and how you plan to use them in the future.

What are your areas of writing weakness? How do you address them?

What works for you? What doesn’t?

What is the most important thing you learned about writing this semester?

Hand in #1-3 above (professionally put together and informally presented) during the party on our last day of class. (5 points) 2 extra credit points if you turn it in early.
Are your essays typed, double-spaced with 12-point font, and error-free?
Will you include any optional, creative additions, such as a cover sheet, table of contents, artwork, graphics, pictures, poetry, or something else?
Can you bake cookies for our party? Or, can you bring music, chips, clean jokes, or just yourself? What will you say to present your portfolio?

Final exam—______________________________________________. Arrive on time prepared to revise one of your on-demand essays. This essay exam will be evaluated using the department rubric, and you must pass the final exam in order to pass the course. (25 points). This is the last day to turn in late portfolios (with a substantial penalty).
