Any help would be appreciated with the following spoken mistake -

'The people was very kind' (pre-intermediate level)

1.identify what is wrong with the sentence.

2.write what probably caused the mistake.

3.identify what type of mistake it is.

4.write how you would correct it.

My answers:

1.singular vs. plural problem

2.The student is not aware of subject + verb agreement or perhaps the student considered 'people' to be a singular noun as 'person'.

3.grammer

4.make aware of the subject + verb agreement.

My tefl tutor has asked me to re do this question and gave the following comments:

'What kind of mistake was it? think of their own language. Do all languages think of people as plural'.

From the tutor's comments I can see that she is implying 'mother tongu interference' but would appreciate any comments on this!

Many thanks,

Denise.
