Help define "importance"

i am writing a reference for primary kids. I need to provide the definition for importance. I don't intend to go for "significance".


Can I say: something that really matters / a great effect ?

I'm not sure that primary students will understand the verb 'matter', either, but otherwise 'a quality of really mattering' is accurate. ) . 'Having a great effect' is a little off the mark; 'having the possibility of a great effect' is more to the point.

'Having a great effect' is a little off the mark; 'having the possibility of a great effect' is more to the point. Importance could also indicate qualities of great value, seriousness or concern.
