Help Correct this Essay

My teacher mainly wants us to understand MLA citations. I'm not sure if I should include them for every quote. Should I use it for the "giant invisible diving bell," quote?

I would appreciate it if anyone could give me any new ideas or things to talk about.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

At first glance, this may seem like a dull and grim story of an inactive man. Bauby is imprisoned in a “giant invisible diving-bell,” which must have been immensely depressing, but he speaks more about the joys than the sorrows of his experience. Bauby does not die in spirit which is surprising and astonishing in its own right.

Bauby was able to preserve his strength of mind despite his new body. Although all he can do is blink his left eye he manages to keep his wit, style, and ardent approach to life. Ironically, in his new body Bauby has much else to do.

"You can wander off in space or in time, set out for Tierra del Fuego or for King Midas's court. You can visit the woman you love, slide down beside her and stroke her still-sleeping face. You can build castles in Spain....” (Page 5)

Dependant on others for every irritating part of his physical existence, Bauby is able to joke. In his own way he enjoys the company of the staff.

“If he leaves Berck, which seems likely, who will be left for me to sneer at? I shall no longer have the solitary, innocent pleasure of hearing his eternal question: “Do you see double?” and replying – deep inside -- “Yes, I see two assholes, not one,”” (Page 55)

Astoundingly, Bauby's internal energy and determination are able to shine. Through dreams, he makes movie scenarios, travel journeys and a play. However, it is not to long before reality intrudes.

"Then it grows dark again. "Damn! It was only a dream"." (Page 56)

Bauby's internal energy is again present when he is around his children. It’s evident Bauby loves his children when he worries about how he may be a burden on them. However, he realizes that his children remain confident. Through these feelings Bauby is able to create a special bond with his family. In this respect Bauby is a loving and caring human being despite his negative outward nature.

Bauby was able to live his life with content. In the outer layer, Bauby's tale seemed tragic and dull however the inner shell was filled with spirit for life. His book is an extraordinary accomplishment by a courageous and determined man.
