Help: compounds, and some informal expressions

Hello everyone,

I'm a student studying English - Arabic translation, now I'm doing my translation porject which is to translate a book, I choose a very beneficial one. However, it's a bit difficult to me, and my supervisor said that I'm not gonna be able to translate it. But I took the challenge and I'm happy I did!

I have translated 30 pages so far, but I've come across some compounds and expression that I didn't understand. I hope you help me with the meaning of what's writtin in red. Please explain the meaning of what's in green becuase I didn't get the idea.

the book is The Seven Secrets of Learning Revealed,

By Dr. Laurence D. Martel
