Hello, Antonia!
a) to ****: to strike, thrust or shove against, often with head or horns; "He butted his sister out of the way." > they were thrusting their heads over/against?/ something; depending on what the "something" is, it can be real or abstract
b) she felt something was wrong, so it made her very cautious.

Further to Pieanne's reply:

'Butting heads' – like two rams fighting.

'Put on her guard' – one duellist says to another, 'en garde!', at the beginning of the bout. If I am 'put on my guard', something has happened to make me wary.
