What is the correct way to write this sentence?

I asked a friend once “Why can’t I just do things that interest me, why must I take classes that I have no interest in?”

  • But your sentence 1 looks fine, if you add a comma or colon after 'once'.

I myself would say either:

I once asked a friend, “Why can’t I just do things that interest me — why must I take classes that I have no interest in?”.

or

I once asked a friend: “Why can’t I just do things that interest me? Why must I take classes that I have no interest in?”

or
