Hi In the alphabet, there are 5 vowels and 20 consonants. And then there is 'y' that can work in either way The question of how many sounds is difficult. Very roughly, in the UK, as a basic list of vowel sounds: Short: a, e, i, o, u, oo Long: ah, ay, ee, ah, oh, oo Dipthongs: i, ow, oi, ew Also: uh As a basic list of consonant sounds: b, p, d, t, s, sh, k, g, j, zh, f, v, l, m, n, r, h, y, w, z, th and th Those are just rough lists, but I hope that helps Dave

On a good day, I can probably do a fair impression of RP, so I liked Karen's chart
I missed out the vowels: awe and air
Also, amongst the consonants: ch and ng
So, yes, I'll go with 19 vowels and 24 consonants for the UK
