How well does the director Alejandro Amenabar succeed in building tension for the audience in the opening credits of his film 'The Others' ?.
Prepare to be really scared? Prepare to be sat awe? Pepare to be truly suprised! The Others is a spine-tingling, captivating film written by Spainish director Alejandro Amenabar in 2001.Amenabar makes this film really breath-takingly, terrifying by writing his own dark, gothic music leaving everything to the imagination. The Others is an old fashioned horror in which Amenabar plays upon, to make each scene full of darkness and fear. The film is set at the end of the second world war where Grace-Nicole Kidman- a mother of two, moves into a large mansion in order to wait for her husband returnig from battle. "Now children are you sitting comfortably? then ill begin". This is the qoute which introduces us to the film and draws the reader in. Nicole Kidmans voice speaks very calm and soft making the film seem very innocent. But the qoute is very deceptive as it makes us believe the film is a fairytale and will have a happy ending. Its somewhat like a childrens story and the narration makes the audience believe that their the children whom the voice is talking to. It makes the film seem like its made for a family. In the first of half of the opening credits the music is a sweet, cheery tune to again give the impression that the film is very innocent and harmless. Flutes and chimes are used in this part to give the film a heart warming opening as these instruments are often associated with children, again perseving this to be a family film. The images used here are very angelic, peacefull and quite religous to give the effect of a relaxed, cheerfull film. At the start the pictures show lots of light and joyfull faces among the children and adults showing that they are a happy family. These images may link in with the reality of the film by saying they were a happy family at the start. Giving again the effect that this is a light hearted family film. The only light used in the opeining credits is flickering candle light. The candle light is very effective in enlightening the good images and the bad. It used as candle light is perseved to be very spooky and gothic. It spot lights the images to create shadows linking in with darkness and the overall horror genre. The candle light is very revealing in showing us ome of the ideas and themes of the film, as the childrenare photosensitive and can only be seen by dim light. Gradualy, the peacefull, happy images change into darker ones as we progress through the title sequence. The picture of a locker door is extremly captivating as it reveals a number of hidden messages. It gives a feeling of being trapped, again linking in with the reality of the film as the children cannot leave the house. It also relates to secretes and death, giving the audience the idea that the film will turn nasty. As the images change so does the music!. The cheery, childrens tune is slowly replaced by a tense, gothic sound played by violins and bases. The base adds tension and keeps the audience on edge, whereas the violin is associated as an adults instrument and is used to create a sinister eerie sound. Ghostly whispers in the background indicate the idea of secretes, again linking in to the themes an ideas of the film, when saying this film is not at all what it seems. The music allows the audience to use their imagination to predict what will in the film. The fairytale suddenly comes to an abrupt end as the drawings fade into the first mis-en-scene shot. The child-like drawing of the house fades into the real one. The house we see is very old, surrounded by mist, excedingly isolated and away from any civalisation. The perfect setting for a horror film! Althought this is very eerie, its also very peacefull and relaxed.
The peaceful, relaxed shot suddenly turns into a nightmare as the opening credits close and the film opens. A scream takes the audience by surprise and keeps them totally on edge introducing us to the main body of the film. The scene opens with an extreme close up so we can see the fear on the actors face. As the shot pans out to establish the location the camera starts to tilt and shake showing and uneasy, emotional scene revealing that something bad is going to happen in this film. This device sets up the film and shows the nightmare theme behind it.
